Due to infection, your doctor has determined that it is necessary to leave your tooth open. The purpose of this is to allow the infection to drain and alleviate any pressure or swelling due to the infection.

If the tooth has been LEFT OPENED

  1. Irrigate your tooth as instructed with warm water and salt after each meal and/or snack. If given a syringe, use the syringe to rinse the opening within the tooth. In addition, use the warm water and salt to “water chew” (using a vertical motion as opposed to a horizontal one) in order to keep the tooth open and clean.
  2. Avoid blocking the tooth with food by cautiously eating on the opposite side of your mouth. To remove any accidental blockage, VIGOROUSLY rinse after meals with warm water and salt. You may cleanse the opening in the tooth with a toothbrush.
  3. If medication has been prescribed, take as directed. Contact our office immediately in the swelling continues to worsen or if you continue to have significant pain.
